Meet Our Host Organizing Committee Co-Chairs

We are very honoured to be working with many talented individuals who will be planning 2016 Nationals. We have several committees who are tirelessly working towards making this is the best Nationals yet. Our co-chairs are on board and ready to take 2016 to the next level.

At ten years of age Bob Russell started paddling at the Banook Canoe Club (BCC). Later, he competed at the National Championships from 1964 onwards and paddled in the first Canada Games in 1969. Bob started to coach at Banook for several years. He later became their Paddling Chair, Vice President and then President. Bob also served for several years as the Chair of the CanoeKayak Canada Domestic Development Committee. He and wife Laurel have four sons who have all paddled competitively. Andrew represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics, while Ben has competed at several World Championships and won a gold medal in the C2 at the 2015 Pan American Games. Laurel is also a qualified international official. Bob is very honoured to serve as Co-Chair of the Host Organizing Committee.

L.A. Dempster was a member of the 1992 Olympic CanoeKayak team. She brings a unique athlete's perspective to the organization of the National Championships. L.A.’s canoeing background began with competing in her first National Championships at the age of ten. Growing as an athlete she has competed in the 1989 Junior World Championships, the 1993 and 1994 Senior World Championships - with a fourth place finish in 1993. She won a silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games and was a member of the National CanoeKayak Team from 1989-1995. Over the past four years she has been a dedicated volunteer coach at Maskwa Aquatic Club; focusing on developing young athlete's passion and skills. With two boys of her own in the competitive program, Maskwa has become L.A.'s summer home away from home. L.A. is excited to be co-chairing the 2016 National Championships.
